About
Our founder and creative director, Mark Lever, is a da Vinci-esque poly-creative who embodies inventive prowess refined over a global odyssey spanning six continents and over 20 countries.
Born in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, in 1963, Mark’s journey is built on a foundation of resilience forged through childhood adversity.
Relocated to Tauranga at seven, he grappled with bullying and familial turmoil, seeking solace in his imagination as an escape from the twin traumas at school and home.
Finishing his formal education at 15, he embarked on what would become a multi-faceted career trajectory, against backdrops ranging from factories to mines, kitchens to squash courts, photo studios to film sets.
In a nomadic pursuit of inspiration, Mark traversed the globe, immersing himself in roles from sous chef in Michelin-starred kitchens to motorcycle courier in London (it was in London that his passion for photography blossomed, after a chance encounter propelled him into the world of high-end commercial photography alongside such stars of the scene as Linda McCartney) before realising his true calling lay beyond, but also at home.
The crash of ’87 precipitated a return to Aotearoa, where Mark’s lens shifted to the landscapes of his beloved homeland before segueing into filmmaking. Collaborations with renowned local artists culminated in award-winning music videos, solidifying Mark’s status as a multi-talented creative luminary.
International campaigns beckoned, with Mark directing commercials for global brands while nurturing his love for sailing and woodworking, and he co-founded SmallSpace in 2018, melding craftsmanship with innovative design in bespoke renovations and furniture.
With Daedalic Lightworks, Mark is now channelling his expertise into product design, crafting high-end architectural hardware, lighting and more, imbued with the essence of New Zealand’s natural beauty. Each piece bears the imprint of Mark’s love of the circular economy and repurposing materials, as well as his reverence for craftsmanship and sustainability, embodying the essence of modern artisanal luxury.
